What is Urology?

Urology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive system.  Urologists are surgeons who are trained to diagnose, treat and manage patients with urological problems.

This includes adrenal gland, kidney, ureteral, bladder, prostate, penis, urethral, testicular and vaginal disorders.

Urology combines management of medical (non-surgical) problems such as urinary tract infections, and surgical problems such as the correction of congenital abnormalities and the surgical management of cancers.

What Do Urologists Treat?

The Division of Urology provides expertise and surgical treatment of disorders of the urinary and male genital tracts. This includes care for adults and children, as well as couples with infertility. Adult urologic concerns commonly treated include: urological cancer, prostatic hypertrophy, urinary trauma, incontinence, kidney stones, impotence, and infertility issues. This care is provided at the University of Utah Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, and the VA Hospital. A full range of urologic care for children (under 18 years) is provided by University of Utah pediatric urologists at Primary Children`s Medical Center.

The Utah Stone Treatment Center provides state-of-the-art surgical and non-surgical treatment of kidney, ureteral and bladder stones, as well as a program for the medical management and prevention of urinary tract stones.

Our urological oncologists are part of the Genitourinary Cancer Program providing integrated cancer care at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, including robotic laparoscopy for procedures such as radical prostatectomy.

The Andrology Laboratory at the University of Utah has been providing infertility services since 1978.  Services include the diagnosis of male infertility, therapeutic techniques to improve fertility, embryology services such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo cryopreservation, consultation services, research into infertility, gamete and embryo banking and patient and health care provider education.
