Lauren Asarnow

Psychiatry Ground Rounds, December 15, 2021

Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) is pleased to welcome Lauren Asarnow, PhD, as the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds speaker on Wedensday, December 15, 2021 at 12:00 PM. Her presentation is titled "Evening Circadian Preference and Depression Among Adolescents."

Dr. Asarnow is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is also a researcher and director for the UCSF Child and Adolescent Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program. The program aims to help children, adolescents and their parents easily access effective strategies to improve sleep health for youth through their clinical services and research programs.

As a researcher, Dr. Asarnow has primarily focused on sleep as a potential target for intervention in the prevention and treatment of mental and physical health problems. Her work has shown that late bedtime is an important target for early intervention for the prevention of adverse emotional, academic and physical health outcomes among youth.

One of her current studies is designed to assess whether a sleep focused treatment improves depression and anxiety symptoms. She has developed and is currently testing an innovative, evidence based intervention to improve sleep in adolescents that can be accessed through mobile phones or computers.
