Bio

As an Acute Care Surgeon, the main focus of Dr. Enniss’ clinical practice is centered on the surgical care of the critically ill and injured patient. He is an integral member of the Trauma Surgery service, the Emergency General Surgery Service and the Surgical Intensive Care team. As a board certified surgical intensivist, he also cares for our nation’s critically ill veterans through a joint appointment at the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center. Dr. Enniss also contributes to the General Surgery needs of the University Medical Center through an elective practice with a focus on reconstruction of complex abdominal wall defects.

Academic Bio

Dr. Toby M. Enniss joined the General Surgery faculty at the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor in 2010 following completion of his General Surgery Residency and Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery Fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He has been an important addition to and a positive force in the further development of the Acute Care Surgery program at the University of Utah.

Dr. Enniss is the Director of Acute Care Surgery. His efforts to foster collaboration among providers caring for patients with emergency general surgery needs and development of a prospective database to support quality improvement and acute care surgery research have been integral in advancing the Acute Care Surgery program. In line with his interest in performance improvement, he also serves as Clinical Director of Performance Improvement Patient Safety efforts of the Trauma program.

He is an enthusiastic educator, being actively engaged in numerous facets of the education of medical students, residents from several specialties and midlevel providers. His enthusiasm for surgery and surgical education is reflected by his uniformly excellent evaluations of his efforts.

Dr. Enniss demonstrates a bright academic future in clinical outcomes and quality improvement research through collaborative efforts across numerous specialties involved in the care of the injured and acutely ill patient.
