The American Cancer Society has awarded $50,000 in transportation and lodging grant funding to Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah (U of U) to alleviate costs for cancer patients.
"We are so grateful to the American Cancer Society, who is an invaluable partner, for their generous gift to support patients and loved ones with transportation-related needs," says Amy Horyna, MSW, manager of patient and family support at Huntsman Cancer Institute. "Many of our patients travel great distances across Utah and the Mountain West to receive treatment, attend clinical appointments, and participate in clinical trials. A cancer diagnosis is challenging in so many ways, and transportation should not be an obstacle to access life-saving cancer treatment. This gift will make a huge difference by allowing us to deliver assistance directly to patients who need it most."
In addition to Huntsman Cancer Institute, an additional 250 health systems received grant funding. Based on assistance provided through previous funding, these grants will provide more than 228,000 rides for nearly 17,000 people in treatment and over 9,000 nights of free lodging.
