US News Badge 2022-2023

U.S. News and World Report announced its list of the top cancer programs in the nation and Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah was recognized again as one of the best in the country, ranking 33rd for cancer care.

For the 2022-2023 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide. Huntsman Cancer Institute is the only hospital in the Mountain West to be ranked for cancer care.

“We are grateful for this prestigious honor that reflects the dedication of our cancer care and research teams in furthering our vision of delivering a cancer-free frontier,” said Sachin Apte, MD, chief clinical officer at Huntsman Cancer Institute and physician-in-chief of the cancer hospital. “To be recognized at such a high level confirms that when patients come to Huntsman Cancer Institute for treatment, they will receive exemplary world-class care.”

U.S. News assessed several aspects of cancer care to arrive at its list of the best cancer hospitals in the country. The goal is to help patients who face a complicated medical condition find skilled care. According to U.S. News., many cancer patients with a difficult diagnosis would be better served by one of the ranked hospitals.

Huntsman Cancer Institute received the highest possible scores in patient outcomes, discharging patients to home, number of patients cared for, nurse staffing levels, and access to advanced technologies and services for cancer patients. Status as a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and certification by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy were also factored into the rank as reflections of the high standard of care provided at Huntsman Cancer Institute.

The U.S. News’ review of Huntsman Cancer Institute found surgical care in colon, lung, ovarian, prostate, and uterine cancers to be “high performing” relative to other hospitals. More than 6,000 hospitals were reviewed for their surgical programs in these areas; hospitals that were recognized with high performing cancer surgery programs reported data that were “significantly better” than the national average. This analysis included a review of the number of cancer surgeries performed in a given year, patient outcomes, cancer center designation, and more.

Huntsman Cancer Institute is part of University of Utah Health, which was recognized as the top health system in both Utah and the Salt Lake City metro area for the ninth year in a row.
