The L.S. Skaggs Patient Wellness Center provides health and wellness programming for individuals in our community. Through an innovative inter-professional approach, students and faculty from the Colleges of Health, Pharmacy, Nursing, and the School of Dentistry work together to the benefits of our patients and clients.

Notice to Providers

Patients can be referred by their health care team, although a referral is not required for participation. Referrals can be placed through EPIC and System Smart Phrases with program details are available to be placed in the After Visit Summary.

Getting Here

Parking

Parking is available at the Ray and Tye Noorda Oral Health Sciences Building (University of Utah School of Dentistry) in the parking structure on Level P3. The vehicle entrance is on the back side of the parking structure and there is assigned patient parking on Level P3.

Public Transportation

Campus shuttles are available for transportation from UTA Trax stations on campus. UTA Trax, bus, and campus shuttle schedules are available here.

Programs

Intensive Lifestyle Program

The Intensive Lifestyle Program looks at the components of a healthy lifestyle to get you started on your way to feeling great. Most chronic diseases can be prevented or improved by lifestyle, but a healthy lifestyle also helps immediately by improving sleep, energy, mood, and focus. The program consists of 12 weekly 90 min sessions and access to our gym for the duration of the program.

Features of the Program

  • Weekly group sessions lead by a health coach
  • Personalized exercise prescription
  • Supervised exercise: for those that need assistance starting or continuing with an exercise program
  • Focus on eating for pleasure and health at the same time
  • Discussions on sleep
  • Using mindfulness to improve resilience
  • Coaching to help make these changes doable and fun

Who Should Attend?

Anyone interested in making changes in their lifestyle (nutrition, physical activity, sleep, or stress management) should consider this program. We screen for symptoms of active heart disease and may require clearance from your physician.

Supervised Medical Exercise Gym

The Medically Supervised Exercise Gym promotes a physically active lifestyle in a supportive group atmosphere. Most participants will be referred by their physicians.

Features of the Program

  • Medication review by a pharmacist
  • Baseline exercise fitness test and mobility assessment by an exercise specialist
  • Supervised individual and group-based exercise program (aerobic, strength, yoga, boxing, and others)
  • Regular evaluation of exercise tolerance and progress
  • Group classes on health topics: nutrition, stress management, sleep hygiene

  • Overweight or obese
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Stroke survivors
  • Bariatric patients
  • Others requiring supervised exercise

Wellness Coaching

A wellness coach helps with health changes, including: sleep, stress, exercise, nutrition, life satisfaction, and time management. Wellness coaches help you work through obstacles and set goals to make lifestyle changes.

  • Coaching is based on the goals you want to achieve.
  • The coach helps you map a plan to overcome barriers and achieve your goals.

What Is the Benefit of Participating in Wellness Coaching?

A partner on the journey to being healthy and well provides support and advice when needed. Here are some reasons you may want a coach:

  • Quick fixes rarely have lasting effects
  • Wellness is more than losing weight
  • Confidence in reaching health goals can be intimidating
  • Focusing on long term outcomes (disease and weight loss) can be frustrating

How Many Sessions Are Necessary?

Everyone is different. The number of sessions depends on what the person needs. It is usually recommended to have at least one follow-up to assess the success of the goal-setting process.
