(SALT LAKE CITY)—The University of Utah Health Science has announced that David H. Perrin, Ph.D., currently provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will start as dean of the College of Health on Aug. 1.
Perrin brings outstanding credentials as a scholar, teacher and administrator to his new position, according to Vivian S. Lee, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., senior vice president for health sciences.
"As a seasoned senior administrator, honored educator and renowned expert in the field of athletic training, Dr. Perrin has the expertise and experience to help lead the College of Health to even greater educational and academic accomplishments," says Lee, also dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of University of Utah Health Care. "I look forward to working with him and I am confident he will do an excellent job."
Perrin is a renowned expert in the field of athletic training and has authored, co-authored and edited three books on athletic injuries, served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Athletic Training and founding editor of the Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, and is the editor of a five-textbook series on athletic training education.
Before taking his current positions at UNC Greensboro, Perrin served as Dean of the School of Health and Human Performance at the university. Prior to that, he directed the graduate programs in athletic training and sports medicine at the University of Virginia, where he founded the Sports Medicine and Athletic Training Research Laboratory and mentored more than 50 doctoral students in sports medicine.
He twice has been honored with awards for his outstanding teaching in the field of kinesiology, and is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, National Athletic Trainers' Association and the National Academy of Kinesiology.
While the University conducted the search for the College of Health dean, Robin L. Marcus, PT, Ph.D., OCS, associate professor of physical therapy, served as interim dean. "I want to thank and commend Dr. Marcus for her work as interim dean and for her commitment to the College of Health," Lee says.
