Salt Lake City, Utah — Responding to a critical gap in mental health care, Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah has launched a new intensive outpatient program focused on perinatal and reproductive mental health. The program serves adults ages 18 and older whose mental health is affected by pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy loss, parenting, or related trauma.
The Nest Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based care through a collaborative, multidisciplinary team with specialized training in perinatal mental health. Designed to support individuals during some of life’s most vulnerable transitions, the program offers structured, short-term treatment that emphasizes healing, stability, and long-term well-being.
Developed in response to the community's growing need for specialized, structured care, the Nest IOP supports individuals during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and reproductive transitions. Intensive outpatient programs are designed for patients who require a higher level of support than traditional outpatient care but do not meet criteria for inpatient hospitalization, providing an intermediate level of care that is both accessible and clinically appropriate.
“This program grew out of the recognition that an entire generation has been struggling with their emotional and mental health. When a mother’s mental health suffers, the effects ripple through the entire family. By giving individuals the tools and support they need to thrive, we improve the health and well-being of families and, ultimately, the whole community.”
Participants in the program meet three days a week—Tuesday through Thursday—from 10 am to 1 pm at Huntsman Mental Health Institute’s flagship hospital, located at 501 Chipeta Way in Research Park on the University of Utah campus. Programming includes group and individual therapy, expressive therapies, and medication management tailored to support participants in the program. A virtual participation option is available for those facing transportation or access barriers.
The program supports individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) during pregnancy, postpartum, or other reproductive life stages. Care also addresses the lasting effects of trauma, including pregnancy loss, traumatic birth experiences, and complex emotional responses related to pregnancy and parenthood. Many participants additionally seek support for relationship stress, parenting challenges, childcare concerns, and other major life transitions.
Participants in the program build resilience, connection, and long-term coping skills within a compassionate, supportive environment where their experiences are heard, validated, and respected. The program typically runs eight to ten weeks, offering targeted care during periods of heightened need.
“No matter where you are in your pregnancy or parenting journey, you don’t have to navigate this experience alone,” Jawish said. “You and your family deserve care that recognizes the weight of this moment and meets you with clinical excellence, genuine warmth, and deep compassion.”
Enrollment in the Nest Intensive Outpatient Program does not require a referral.
