What Is Gastric Band Surgery?

During lap band surgery, also called gastric band surgery, your surgeon will place an adjustable band around your upper stomach with no cutting or stapling of your stomach. Once in place, your surgeon will inflate the band with saline through a port and that is secured to your abdominal wall.

This creates a small stomach pouch that reduces the amount of food that your stomach can hold at one time. This helps you gradually lose weight by creating a feeling of fullness with small amounts of food.

Benefits of Adjustable Gastric Banding

Patients who have lap band surgery see many benefits, including the following:

  • Patients lose up to 50 percent of their extra weight over three to five years.
  • Most patients lose weight steadily, losing more weight as time goes on.
  • Most patients don't have symptoms that interfere with their day-to-day activites (heartburn, vomiting, discomfort, and difficulty eating a wide range of foods).
