Douglas S. Nelson, MD

  • Dr. Nelson attended Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at St Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia PA, and fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and is fluent in medical Spanish. He is on the medical staffs of Primary Children’s Hospital and the University of Utah Medical Center.

    Dr. Nelson has been on the faculty of the University of Utah School of Medicine for 30 years. He is a Professor of Pediatrics, and a member of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He has served as the associate division chief, fellowship director, schedule coordinator, and Emergency Department Medical Director at Primary Children’s Hospital. His other certifications include CPHIMS (Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems).

    Dr. Nelson currently serves as a Medical Director of Informatics for Intermountain Health in two main areas: Children's Health, and Learning And Engagement. In the first of these roles he works to improve the efficiency, functionality, and safety of Intermountain's electronic health record (EHR) used to care for pediatric patients. In his learning and engagement role, he oversees all Cerner-based EHR training and coaching throughout Intermountain's Canyons region.

    Dr. Nelson has served as an author on over 20 peer-reviewed research articles, which focus on the use of a pediatric observation unit, pediatric sedation, influenza, and appendicitis. He has written numerous chapters in standard medical textbooks, on topics including pediatric seizures, pediatric sedation, and altered mental status/coma.

    Dr. Nelson has been an invited expert lecturer at local, regional, national, and international medical meetings. Topics of these talks have included pediatric procedural sedation, pediatric orthopedic emergencies, pediatric behavioral health emergencies, pediatric septic shock, pediatric poisonings, and prevention and treatment of sleep deprivation among medical personnel.

    He knows what he needs to know about babies. As first time parents, he didn't brush off our concerns and asked clarifying questions when he needed more information so he has everything he needs to make his assessment while looking over my daughter. Checked everything about her that we were concerned about while talking into account our worries. He took us in last minute and we were instantly comforted with his feedback.

    Dr. Nelson is an extremely amazing doctor. He has a lovely spirit. We came with serious concerns about our little one. He explained everything in a clear and fun way. He is very down to earth and dealt with our baby with so much love. It was a pleasure meeting such a special doctor.

    He is exactly the kind of pediatrician I want for my baby son. He was kind, cheerful, knowledgeable, and listened well to all my questions. He wasn't condescending or dismissive but instead was happy to explain his reasoning and include any concerns I had in the treatment plan.
