  • Dr. Schunk received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1983 and completed his pediatric residency at University of Utah/Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC), and then Pediatric Chief Resident. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children Hospital Los Angeles. He joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1989 and is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

    Dr. Schunk is a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine and practicing as a Pediatric Emergency Physician at Primary Children’s Hospital. In the Emergency Department at PCH, Dr. Schunk oversees trainees in Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine seeing patients with a wide variety of medical, surgical and traumatic conditions. Dr. Schunk was Chief, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 1998-2010. Dr. Schunk currently serves as Medical Director for the Pediatric Clinical Program for Intermountain Health Care System, Director of Outreach and Network Development, and as the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Primary Children's Hospital.

    Dr. Schunk has been an active investigator in pediatric emergency medicine with specific focus on pediatric foreign body ingestions, pediatric head trauma, DKA, and other areas of acute care. He is active in multi-center research through Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).
