Deep frying is a delicious way to prepare your turkey. However, it can also be very dangerous if you don't take a few simple precautions.
- NEVER, NEVER, NEVER fry your bird indoors. Stay away from wooden decks, under patio covers, and inside a garage. No exceptions.
- NEVER leave a hot fryer unattended. Without proper oversight, the oil will continue to heat until it catches fire.
- NEVER cook a turkey until after it has completely thawed.
- NEVER let kids or pets anywhere near a hot fryer while cooking or for several hours after cooking. The oil can remain hot for hours.
- NEVER fry a turkey without an all-purpose fire extinguisher close by.
- NEVER go near a hot deep fryer unless you’re wearing well-insulated potholders or oven mitts. And wear long sleeves and safety goggles.
- Lastly, if your bird catches fire, call 911 immediately.
