Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah is known for exemplary cancer care, cutting-edge research, and top-notch training throughout Utah and the surrounding region. An obstacle for patients and their loved ones is often distance from Salt Lake City.
Advancing Health
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in Utah and the Mountain West region. Nearly half of all people will experience a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Cancer touches us all. And it takes all communities to improve early detection rates through screening as well as treatment outcomes through advanced techniques and technologies. The Huntsman Cancer Institute Vineyard campus opens new possibilities for cancer research, prevention, and treatments.
“We call this 'Project Unite,' as it is truly a partnership, collaboration, team, and commitment of all of us together, linking arms to improve the health of our communities and end cancer in our lifetimes.”
Mary Beckerle, PhD
CEO of Huntsman Cancer Institute
New Research Opportunities
Huntsman Cancer Institute’s Vineyard campus will offer opportunities for new research programs as well as enhance our impact in existing research areas.
Research shows that distance from a major medical center results in poorer outcomes and later detection of cancer. Utah is a world leader in addressing distance as a disparity; Huntsman Cancer Institute focuses on enhancing access to cancer research, prevention, care, and more for residents of rural and frontier communities.
Planned themes of research at the Vineyard campus include the following:
- State-of-the-art clinical trials for cancer patients, focusing on
- Enhanced access to cancer screening and treatment for people who live far from a major medical center
- The specific cancer burden in Utah and the Mountain West
- Innovative health delivery research, including digital oncology, artificial intelligence, and telehealth
- Advancement of cancer prevention and care through community engagement
Expanding Our Workforce
Located near several higher education and technical training institutions, including Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University, the Huntsman Cancer Institute Vineyard campus will support workforce development, training opportunities, and hands-on learning for the next generation of scientists and health care providers throughout the region for generations to come.
Elevating Quality of Life
The state of Utah is experiencing a major rise in population, and Vineyard, Utah, is the fastest growing U.S. city. The Huntsman Cancer Institute Vineyard campus creates a rare opportunity to co-design the cancer center in this beautiful community near Utah Lake.
