Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) nurses work hard to maintain a safe environment for our patients. Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable patients in health care. Due to their treatment or disease, they have compromised  immune systems. This means there is a decreased number of white blood cells making it difficult to fight infection. HCI has a nurse dedicated to infection prevention.

Hand hygiene is the #1 method we use along with keeping a clean environment. Other examples of how nurses keep patients safe include fall risk assessment, patient identification, early recognition of concerning vital signs, and communicating information between departments. Nurses are in the hospital 24/7 to provide care and treatments and maintain a safe environment.

Today’s featured nurse is Ruth Lee. She has worked in oncology for many years and currently works in our Radiation Oncology department.

I was not the traditional “straight out of high school on to college type of person.” I was married young and raised some of my six children before I followed in my daughter’s footsteps and became a nurse. I often say Nursing School was the hardest thing I have ever done, but it also has yielded such great rewards. I feel I was led into the oncology field by a higher power just a year or two before my husband was diagnosed with cancer. He was a career military man and wasn’t too fond of losing control, and cancer has a way of taking control away from you. He trusted me completely and I was able to guide him into excellent care and we both made the journey from hope to hospice together. I work at Huntsman Cancer Institute because I know what a difference cancer makes in the lives of not only the person with the diagnosis, but in their family and all of their caregivers as well. Nursing in oncology allows us to be caregivers to many, to see the difference we can make in the lives of others, and to cherish the difference they make in ours! Cancer gives us a new understanding of the value of life and how we can enrich our own lives as we enrich the lives of others. Huntsman Cancer Institute is a hospital that values all who walk through that front door.
