Did you know men are less likely than women to see a primary care physician? Men are also more prone to certain types of cancer. For Men’s Health Month in June, we’re highlighting some actions men can take to protect their health.
- Visit your doctor once a year for a yearly exam.
- Get screened for cancer:
- Age 45: Get a colonoscopy every 10 years OR sigmoidoscopy every five years OR fecal occult blood test every year. Talk with your doctor about being screened early if you have certain risk factors for colorectal cancer.
- Ages 50+: Talk with your doctor about benefits and risks of prostate cancer screening. This screening includes the digital rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.
Always talk with your doctor about your family history of medical conditions. Your doctor may recommend other screenings or lifestyle changes based on your family history.
Our health educators in the Cancer Learning Center are happy to talk with you about any questions you may have regarding cancer prevention, cancer screenings or any other general cancer related topics. They are available through live chat, text, phone (888-424-2100) or you can e-mail cancerinfo@hci.utah.edu.
