National Health Education Week celebrates health educators and recognizes the important role they play in health care. Health educators have training and education in community health, health literacy, public health, health education, and other related areas. My job at HCI is to provide accurate, health-literate (easy to understand) cancer information to patients, their family members, and anyone else who has questions about cancer topics.

Cancer Pharmacists Do More Than Fill Prescriptions

Pharmacists at HCI do much more than just fill prescriptions. They counsel patients about new treatment regimens and potential side effects. They work with large teams of health care professionals to provide the best patient care. These multidisciplinary teams include physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, transplant coordinators, social workers, medical assistants, schedulers, and more. Putting the patient first also means the HCI pharmacy team works with cutting-edge research and technologies.

Providing Spiritual Care for HCI Patients and Staff

Two people occupy a small office in a big building. Huntsman Cancer Institute chaplains Gerson Annunciacao and John Cooper start and end their days in close quarters, often checking in on one another. But most of their time is spent across the rooms and corridors of the hospital, tending to HCI patients and staff. And the COVID-19 pandemic has been, for many—chaplains included—the most trying time of their careers.

Huntsman Cancer Institute Leadership Announcement: Cairns Named Chief Academic Officer, Welm Named Senior Director of Basic Science

Today, Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah announced new leadership appointments for two long-standing cancer center members. Brad Cairns, PhD, has accepted an appointment as chief academic officer at HCI. Alana Welm, PhD, has accepted an appointment as senior director of basic science, a role previously held by Cairns. The new leadership appointments of Cairns and Welm are effective immediately.

A Leukemia Survivor Returns the Care He Received

Back when he was 19, Trey was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a blood cancer that affects the immune system. Trey's experience with his nurses while he was in treatment inspired him to go to nursing school. Now he works in the blood and marrow transplant unit at HCI.
