Moran Eye Center among Nation’s Best Hospitals for Ophthalmology

The results are in: physicians around the country rate the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah among the nation's best.

The U.S. News & World Report 2018-2019 Best Hospitals for Ophthalmology rankings place the Moran Eye Center at No. 13 in the country for providing exceptional care to patients with the most complex eye conditions.

"It's a distinct privilege for us to offer expert eye care that can preserve and even restore vision following a difficult diagnosis," said Moran CEO Randall J Olson, MD. "We are also constantly improving our care through research that puts us on the cutting edge of new therapies for blinding diseases such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration."

The Moran Eye Center serves as the largest ophthalmology clinical care and research facility in the Intermountain West with more than 60 faculty members and 10 satellite clinics. Physicians provide comprehensive care in nearly all ophthalmic subspecialties, making Moran a major referral center with over 142,000 patient visits and 7,000 surgeries annually. Moran also supports 15 research labs with internationally awarded faculty including one of the world's top retinal teams.

The U.S. News rankings come on the heels of a recent survey by physician website Doximity that ranked Moran's residency program No. 10 in the nation for 2018-2019.

Moran faculty train four residents each year in one of the country's most selective and unique programs, identified as a model by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. While nationally ophthalmology residents must perform 86 cataract surgeries the average is 140 Moran residents each perform nearly 300 cataract surgeries and a range of 300 subspecialty surgeries, all supervised by board-certified attending faculty. They also receive protected research time and an opportunity to customize their education.

To compile its rankings, U.S. News surveys ophthalmologists with a single question about where they would send their most complex cases. Doximity also surveys physician opinions to determine its reputation-based rankings.
