International Observers
Moran recruits the most talented and enthusiastic ophthalmologists from low-resource settings to the Global Outreach Division’s Observer Program.
Each observer spends up to three months in Salt Lake City training in an eye care subspecialty, such as glaucoma, retina, anterior segment, or pediatrics. Visiting doctors attend conferences and rounds, participate in research, practice on surgical simulators, and observe clinics and surgeries.
Afterward, their physician mentors from Moran visit them in their home hospitals, helping to refine their skills in these more challenging environments. After training with Moran doctors, the Observers become the teachers, sharing their new skills with ophthalmologists in their local hospitals and clinics.
Since 2008, the Moran Eye Center has trained over 100 observers from 32 different countries.
As of 2019, Moran is an ICO (International Council of Ophthalmology) Accredited host site. The ICO offers scholarships for observer experiences all over the world.

International Resident Exchange
All senior residents at the Moran Eye Center receive the opportunity to complete a training rotation at an international ophthalmic institution, such as the distinguished Aravind Eye Hospital in India, and the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu, Nepal.
In these unique clinical and surgical settings, residents are exposed to new techniques and gain experience in conditions and health systems not often seen in the United States.
