Inaugural Holder of the John W. Athens, MD, and Georgia Athens, RN, Endowed Chair in Classical Hematology

The Division of Hematology at the University of Utah's Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce that Anna Beaudin, PhD, has been named the inaugural holder of the John W. Athens, MD, and Georgia Athens, RN, Endowed Chair in Classical Hematology.

Beaudin, an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Associate Chief of Basic Research within the Division of Hematology, is a leading researcher in hematopoiesis and the study of disease susceptibilities acquired during pregnancy that impact health throughout adulthood. Her work, which has received significant National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, reflects her dedication to advancing the field of hematology and improving patient care outcomes.

The John W. Athens, MD, and Georgia Athens, RN, Endowed Chair honors the legacy of John W. Athens, a pioneer in hematology whose work greatly advanced the understanding of neutrophil function. John Athens also played a pivotal role in mentoring the next generation of hematologists and researchers during his tenure as Chief of the Division of Hematology from 1967 to 1991. The endowed chair commemorates John Athens' contributions and underlines the continued importance of research and innovation in hematology.
