Dr. Julio Facelli has been elected as a 2014 Fellow to the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) by the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). The ACMI Fellowship is one of the highest honors in the field of informatics. Congratulations Dr. Facelli.
The ACMI originated in 1984 when five pioneers in informatics decided to establish a society to recognize exceptional expertise in biomedical informatics. Today, the College now exists as an elected body of fellows within AMIA and is the central body for a community of scholars and practitioners who are committed to advancing the informatics field.
Julio Facelli, PhD, FACMI has been a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah since 2002. As the Department's Vice Chair, he has provided outstanding leadership and service. Dr. Facelli has extensive expertise in high performance computing and its application to biomedical data processing, storage, and analysis. In addition to his support of high performance computing infrastructure for the University Health Sciences Center, his methodologies for processing data stored in a HIPAA-compliant environment have enabled efficient supercomputing on biomedical data. Dr. Facelli's work enables application of principles and algorithms developed in other fields to the peculiar challenges in biomedical data analysis.
Dr. Facelli is an accomplished and personal mentor for junior faculty as well as informatics students. He has placed particular emphasis on bringing to our field students with computational backgrounds to apply the techniques they have studied to problems of societal importance. His focus has always been on the individual with a vision of how to improve and enrich the field of biomedical informatics.
