Ana María López, MD, MPH, FACP, has been named President-elect of the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists.
Her term began during Internal Medicine Meeting 2017, ACP's annual scientific meeting held in San Diego from March 30-April 1. Dr. López, is Associate Vice President for Health Equity and Inclusion at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and Director of Cancer Health Equity at the Hunstman Cancer Institute. She is also a Professor of Medicine at the University Of Utah School Of Medicine.
She most recently served on ACP's Board of Regents, which manages the business and affairs of ACP and is the main policy-making body of the College. Dr. López also served as Chair of the Ethics, Professionalism, and Human Rights Committee. Prior to that, she was Governor of ACP's Arizona Chapter. Governors are elected by local ACP members and serve four-year terms. Working with a local council, they supervise ACP chapter activities, appoint members to local committees, and preside at regional meetings.
Dr. López earned a bachelor's degree from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, a master of public health degree from University of Arizona, and a medical degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She completed an internal medicine residency and fellowship at the University of Arizona along with a medical oncology and cancer prevention and etiology fellowship. She is board certified in medical oncology.
She has been a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) since 1999. FACP is an honorary designation that recognizes ongoing individual service and contributions to the practice of medicine. Some areas of professional interest and expertise for Dr. López include cancer prevention, integrative oncology, innovations in health care including telemedicine, and women's health.
