SALT LAKE CITY—University of Utah Hospital has earned the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 5-Star rating for overall quality. Less than 10 percent of academic medical centers nationwide received this highest possible distinction.
The CMS's ratings are based on mortality rates, safety of care, readmission rates, patient experience, effectiveness and timeliness of care, and use of medical images.
"We strive to provide our patients with the highest level of care whether they're coming to see us for an emergency or a routine check-up," said University of Utah Health Chief Medical Quality Officer Robert Pendleton, MD. "It's an honor to be recognized as a Five-Star hospital. I congratulate all our providers and staff for their diligent work in delivering top care to our community and surrounding states."
CMS rates more than 3,600 hospitals nationwide. Just 9 percent of hospitals received five stars while 31 percent received 4 stars, 32 percent received three stars, 20 percent received 2 stars and 7 percent received one star.
University of Utah Hospital is among 337 hospitals nationwide and six hospitals in Utah to be named Five-Star hospitals.
