Due to recent policy changes at University of Utah Health, patients and visitors will notice a new system in place. This is to ensure the safety of patients, providers, and staff from the potential spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
At University Hospital, valet and security will greet patients and visitors as they drive into the main hospital area. They will be asked the reason for their visit; then, it will be determined if they are symptomatic or asymptomatic.
If a patient is symptomatic, they will be directed to self-park in the helipad terrace. From there, patients are given instructions and sent to a blue triage tent located on the left side of the Emergency Department. These same instructions will be given to Urgent Care and Emergency Department patients.
If patients are asymptomatic or have a clinical appointment, they will be directed to self-park in the patient terrace parking lot. Patients can walk to the entrance of the hospital or be escorted in a U of U Health golf cart. Visitors will follow these same instructions.
Patients and visitors should be prepared to be asked multiple questions. One of the questions is whether they have any of three COVID-19 symptoms: fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If so, patients will be directed to the blue triage tent near the Emergency Department. Visitors will be informed of U of U Heath’s new visitor policy and be provided a handout.
Patients and visitors entering University Hospital are required to use hand sanitizer. They will be welcomed by several information signs about COVID-19. They also may notice hospital employees wearing face masks. This does not mean they are sick; instead, they are using personal protective equipment (PPE) to keep themselves safe from potential COVID-19 exposure. Visitors don’t need to wear a mask unless they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or have been confirmed with COVID-19.
