Disorder Causes

There are two main causes of endocrine disorders:

  1. Hormone imbalance - A condition caused by a gland producing too much or too little of the hormone it supplies to the body
  2. Lesions or tumors – In the endocrine system, these can affect hormone levels.

Either of these developments can affect how the body functions and how you feel.

Types of Disorders

There are many types of endocrine disorders including diabetes. Here is a list of the more common:

  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Diabetes
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Gigantism
  • Hyperthyroidism

While disorders of the endocrine system can be difficult to diagnose and treat, our specialists are not just fellowship trained and certified in treating these disorders but are also consistently researching better methods for treatment and management. This allows us to provide you with the most up-to-date care methods and advancements in research.

Diagnosing Endocrinology Disorders

Osteoporosis Testing

Bone density testing (or DEXA testing) is fast, easy, and painless. It is a simple X-ray done to help diagnose patients at risk for osteoporosis. When you arrive, you will be asked a few questions about your health and medications to help us make sure we are billing your insurance properly. You may be asked to change into an exam gown if you are wearing any zippers, buttons, or hooks in the areas we will be scanning. You will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table for about five minutes.

The results of your test will be sent to your referring provider who will be able to answer any questions concerning your results.

Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasonography

The Thyroid Ultrasound Clinic provides comprehensive care to patients with thyroid nodules, hyperparathyroidism, thyroid cancers, and long term thyroid cancer surveillance. Fine needle biopsy of thyroid nodules, lymph-nodes, and parathyroid adenomas are performed under ultrasound guidance with bed side assessment of cells obtained during the biopsy. The majority of patients undergo the procedure during the same visit, thereby reducing the number of visits to outpatient clinics and procedure suites.

We have championed a unique method of estimating hormones in the specimens obtained during the biopsy that improves the diagnostic accuracy. We also have the expertise to perform percutaneous alcohol ablation of cystic thyroid nodules.
