Non-Surgical Wrinkle Treatments

Want to rejuvenate your look but you aren’t sure about a surgical treatment? Facial injections and fillers could be an option for you. These non-surgical treatments also allow for minimal side effects and virtually no recovery period.

Reducing Wrinkles With Blockers

Neuromuscular blockers, often referred to as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, are prescription medications that keep muscles from contracting.

Specialists can inject the blockers into your muscles to improve and smooth the appearance of wrinkles caused by your face’s natural expressions, like smiling or laughing. These can include frown lines, forehead lines, and fine lines around the eyes.

You won’t see the full effects of your injections for about a week and peak effects usually show about two weeks after your procedure. Results can last between three and four months depending on where your blockers were injected.

These medications can also be used to treat chronic migraines, excessive sweating of the palms or armpits, jaw tension, and vocal issues, as they block muscles from contracting.

Types of Fillers

Fillers are used for several types of procedures including lip plumping, cheek augmentation, and wrinkle smoothing enhancement.

Lip Fillers

Some fillers are longer lasting than others. If you’re trying lip fillers for the first time, your specialist will likely recommend a temporary filler that lasts for about three months. If you’re looking for something longer-lasting, a filler that will give you results for about one year can be used.

The temporary filler can be dissolved within 30 minutes if you find the plumper isn’t for you. The longer-lasting filler doesn’t allow for that option.

Cheek Fillers

The fillers used for cheek augmentation tend to be long-acting and can be calcium-based. This filler is used for very deep fillings. This type of filler is used for augmentation of a cheekbone, the nasolabial fold, or along the chin line. Depending on the product your surgeon uses, you can expect results to last between one and two years.

Blocker Enhancing Fillers

Fillers are often used in tandem with blockers. As we age we lose collagen and fat from our faces. Wrinkles that were once temporary become permanent, so blockers are no longer enough to completely smooth them.

Fillers are used to puff those permanent wrinkles up, giving you a smoother look overall. If you choose to get fillers, you’ll receive them at a separate appointment following your blocker procedure.

Determining How Much & What Type of Products You Need

During your visit, you and your specialist will discuss what you’d like to change about your face. Each wrinkle needs to be evaluated individually because your specialist needs to determine which type of blocker and how many units to use in each area. The wrong type or amount of blocker can cause problems in other areas of your face.

It’s also important to keep in mind that each individual’s facial muscular structure and bone structure are different, so your specialist will cater your treatment strategy to yours.

Your specialist may offer same-day procedure depending on a few things. If this is your first experience with injectable blockers or fillers, your specialist may encourage you to take some time to think about it.

If you’ve got an ongoing cold or viral infection, your specialist won’t allow you to undergo the procedure for safety reasons.

Facial Injection Procedure & Recovery

These outpatient procedures last about 30 minutes. You can expect some bruising of the face and swelling at injection sites, which will reduce within 20 minutes. You can also use a bit of makeup to cover the bruising after your procedure if you choose.

Recovery for this procedure is minimal. You won’t need prescription pain medication or to take time off of work.

Qualified Facial Plastic Specialists

It’s important for patients to choose an experienced, board-certified facial plastics specialist. Both the type of blockers and fillers and the number of units used are crucial in ensuring your procedure results in the look you want to attain.

Our board-certified specialists have additional training in plastic surgery techniques, often preventing the need for further procedures. Our plastic specialists have both the skill and vision necessary to ensure you can present your best side.
