Get Rid of Your Unwanted Tattoo

Regret your tattoo? Consider having it permanently removed. Tattoo removal with lasers is a safe and effective procedure that will permanently get rid of your unwanted ink.

Though tattoos were once considered more permanent, new laser treatments can now break up the ink particles embedded in your skin. This treatment is much more effective than previous methods, which involved techniques like dermabrasion that could scar or damage the skin.

Some cells (or layers) in your skin don’t move or grow over time. When you get a tattoo, a needle places ink deep within these skin layers. These skin cells then absorb—or eat up—the tattoo ink, causing the ink to stay in your skin for years, or in theory, forever.

Pigment gives a tattoo its color. Lasers attack the pigment particles within those cells, causing the particles to break up into small pieces. Your cells will then naturally remove the pigment particles from your body.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal for You?

Look around at how many people have tattoos. Just as many of those people may end up thinking they should have done something different and would like their tattoo altered, changed, or removed. This is where tattoo removal (or tattoo reduction) comes into play.

Reasons patients may want a tattoo removed include:

  • new job requirements,
  • misspelled text,
  • tattoo regret, or
  • just growing bored of the tattoo.

Schedule a Consultation

Before you can get your tattoo removed, you will need to schedule a consultation first. During your consultation, our providers will discuss:

  • your expectations,
  • whether you're a candidate for the procedure, and
  • a treatment timeline.

Pico Laser Tattoo Removal

University of Utah Health’s cosmetic team is now offering the picosecond laser—the first advancement in laser tattoo removal in the last 20 years. In skilled hands, this laser can remove tattoo ink more effectively and with fewer treatments and potential complications than previous lasers.

How Do Picolasers Work?

The picolaser is the most precise piece of laser technology available to treat pigmented lesions and tattoos. It can release energy bursts as small as one-trillionth of a second. These energy bursts allow the laser to target very small pigment particles. Picoseconds are to a second what a second is to 32,000 years.

Picosecond lasers do a much better job of breaking up tattoo ink particles than earlier laser models.

Please call us to schedule a consultation for picolaser tattoo removal.
