Post Concussion Symptoms

A concussion happens after you experience a blow to the head. During a concussion, you might or might not lose consciousness. There are a wide variety of symptoms after a concussion. In addition to causing dizziness or loss of balance, symptoms can also include:

  • headache,
  • nausea/vomiting,
  • fatigue or difficulty sleeping,
  • double or blurred vision,
  • and sensitivity to light and sound.

Mood Changes

Just like how your body can experience changes after a concussion, your emotions can change too. You may experience the following emotional changes or mood changes after a concussion:

  • irritability,
  • restlessness,
  • anxiety,
  • depression,
  • mood swings,
  • and aggression or a lower tolerance for stress.

Changes to Memory & Concentration

Your memory and mental alertness can also be affected after a concussion. Changes may include:

  • difficulty with short or long term memory,
  • confusion or slowed processing,
  • “fogginess,”
  • and difficulty concentrating.

How Does a Concussion Affect My Balance?

The vestibular system, which includes the inner ear and its connections with the brain, helps your brain sense head movement. The vestibular system helps you stay balanced. It is also keeps your eyes focused while your head is moving.

The inner ear is very small and fragile. It is located in the skull just behind the ear. Because the inner ear is so fragile, trauma to your head can cause inner ear damage which can lead to problems with balance.

Treatment After Concussion

If you are dizzy or have trouble staying balanced after a concussion, vestibular therapy may help. Physical therapists can help you reduce or eliminate dizziness through exercise and management skills. Physical therapy specialists can also work with you to help improve your balance.
