Lowry Bushnell, MD, was born and raised in Utah. Following completion of his military service he attended the University of Utah, College of Pharmacy, receiving a degree in medical biology. He has a specialty interest in psychopharmacology. He received his medical training at the University of Utah, College of Medicine and his psychiatry specialty training at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Dr. Bushnell is the former president of the medical staff of the University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI), now known as the Huntsman Mental Health Institute. He was Clinical Director of adult patient services from 1986-2012. Dr. Bushnell has a special interest in postpartum psychiatric illnesses, depressive and bipolar disorders. He has been a provider of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) services for persons with severe depression and bipolar disorder for 32 years. He is the past Clinical Director of the Electroconvulsive Therapy/Neuro-Stimulation service.
Dr. Bushnell served as the chairman of the Utah State Drug Utilization Review Board for 12 years. He is chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and served as the psychiatric representative on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee for the State of Utah and for the Utah Public Employees Health Plan (PEHP).
Dr. Bushnell provides outpatient consultations for patients being referred to the University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute for consideration of electroconvulsive therapy.
