Bio

Dr. Derek A. Uchida received his undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii and his medical degree from Stanford. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric pulmonology fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Prior to his arrival at the University of Utah in 1995, he was on the faculty at The Children’s Hospital and National Jewish Health in Denver, followed by an appointment as division chief of pediatric pulmonology at the University of South Alabama.

Dr. Uchida is currently practicing pediatric pulmonary medicine at Primary Children’s Medical Center. He has a clinic dedicated to the evaluation and management of children with asthma, as well as a general pulmonology clinic.

Academic Bio

Dr. Uchida received his medical education from Stanford. He completed his Pediatric and Pediatric Pulmonology training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

He joined the faculty at Denver Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Department of Pediatrics in 1988. He was appointed to the faculty at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado in 1989. There, he pursued research targeting the role of eosinophils in asthma pathogenesis under the direction of Dr. Gary Larsen. He then joined the University of South Alabama to become the division chief of Pediatric Pulmonology. Dr. Uchida has been a faculty member of the University of Utah School of Medicine since 1995.

Dr. Uchida’s focus is centered on childhood asthma. He is interested in the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and treatment of childhood asthma. In this regard, he is the medical director for the Children’s Asthma Specialty Clinic, which is considered the regional referral clinic for difficult-to-control asthmatics. Dr. Uchida provides expert consultative services to several local and regional committees on asthma management. He has given lectures on asthma care throughout the state of Utah and Idaho; this has included 4 grand rounds presentations at Primary Children’s Medical Center. Dr. Uchida also serves on the advisory board for Dr. Nkoy’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) grants on improving asthma care of hospitalized children and the transition to ambulatory care. The AHRQ is the lead federal agency charged with improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of healthcare delivery.
