Bio

Dr. Toydemir received his medical degree from the University of Ankara School of Medicine, and completed his Clinical Cytogenetics Fellowship at the University of Utah. He recently joined Department of Pathology after completing his fellowship in Clinical Cytogenetics. Dr. Toydemir is board-certified in Clinical Cytogenetics.

Dr. Toydemir is currently a medical director for the Cytogenetics and Genomic Microarray at ARUP Laboratories. He reviews a wide spectrum of cytogenetic tests including chromosome, FISH, and genomic microarray analyses, on constitutional, oncological, and prenatal samples.

Dr. Toydemir’s research interests focus on understanding the genetic basis of congenital musculoskeletal abnormalities, especially those affecting the distal joints. He also conducts research on non-syndromic developmental dysplasia of the hip, utilizing classical mapping methods as well as next generation sequencing technology. Another interest of Dr. Toydemir include implementation of advanced genetic technologies in detection and characterization of chromosome aberrations in hematological malignancies.

Academic Bio

Reha M. Toydemir, M.D., Ph.D. attended medical school at the University of Ankara in Turkey. He recently joined Department of Pathology after completing his fellowship in Clinical Cytogenetics.

Dr. Toydemir has over 18 years of expertise, which started in 1995 as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Teaching Assistant at the Ankara University School of Medicine, Department of Medical Biology, where he worked both in diagnostic and research laboratories, and evaluated and diagnosed individuals with mental and/or developmental delay, dysmorphic features, or fertility problems.

Dr. Toydemir worked with Dr. Michael J. Bamshad and Dr. Lynn B. Jorde at the University of Utah for his graduate degree on the genetic basis of distal limb contractures. He continued his research on congenital defects of limb development as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute postdoctoral associate at Dr. Mario R. Capecchi’s laboratory.

Dr. Toydemir is the recipient of various awards; published numerous journal articles, among other publications; and serves as an ad hoc reviewer to several journals. He is a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, Turkish Society of Medical Genetics, College of American Pathologists; and a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.
