He received his Medical Doctorate degree from the University of Washington and completed his residency training at the University of Utah Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Following residency he then completed additional fellowship training in orthopaedic traumatology at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center/University of Maryland Baltimore.
