Research Statement

I am an Instructor in Pediatric Rheumatology with a long-term goal of establishing an independent research career with a focus on improving care and outcomes for patients, especially pediatric patients, with vasculitis, focusing on ANCA associated vasculitis (AAV). I developed a research interest in AAV during my pediatric rheumatology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition as a part of my fellowship program I completed a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) program and published two manuscripts describing the treatment and outcomes of AAV; the first was a single center review and the second utilized a large, multicenter administrative database. Through my MSCE training, I gained an invaluable introduction to several research tools including understanding complex study design and statistical analyses, as well as a basis in epidemiologic techniques for addressing confounding in retrospective and large databases. Currently, I am working on several projects aimed at better understanding outcomes in AAV to ultimately improve care. This includes utilizing the Utah Population Database, an extensive statewide database linking healthcare records, public health records and genealogies, to study the clinical and genetic epidemiology of AAV in a population-based cohort. I am also collaborating with other pediatric rheumatologists through the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance to develop consensus treatment plans (CTPs) for AAV in children. The goal of these CTPs is to decrease treatment variability, help identify the most effective treatment strategies, and ultimately pediatric vasculitis outcomes.
