Steffen Schmitz-Valckenberg, MD, specializes in clinical and surgical treatment of macular and retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and is an expert in high-resolution retinal imaging.

Dr. Schmitz-Valckenberg co-founded and directed the Grading of Digital Fundus Examination Reading Center at the University of Bonn, Germany, where he was the Department of Ophthalmology’s assistant medical director. As an expert in high-resolution retinal and fundus autofluorescence imaging, he has used various imaging techniques to map the stages of decline in AMD. Researchers worldwide use this mapping to measure outcomes during interventional clinical trials.

At Moran, Dr. Schmitz-Valckenberg is directing an ophthalmic image reading center that will play a key role in the Sharon Eccles Steele Center for Translational Medicine's drive to take a new therapy for a prevalent form of AMD into clinical trials.

Dr. Schmitz-Valckenberg holds a Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Chair at the University of Utah and is a prolific researcher with more than 165 publications and 120 peer-reviewed articles. His honors include being named by The Ophthalmologist to its Power List 2017: Top 50 Rising Stars.

I have had zero discussion about my cataract position. We had a good discussion about my Glaucoma issues. I was expecting a glaucoma procedure ?? Apparently I left the surgery center after having a cataract procedure without discussion ?? Not Happy, It seems like I am looking through a smudge on my apparent New Lens ??

Dr. Valckenberg recommended strongly that I lie flat on my back with my face when you're at the ceiling for at least 10 days. That is not normally my preferred sleeping position however I determined if I expected him to do his best I could at least attempt to do my best which I did. At this moment my left eye is starting to respond reasonably well and the bubble has disappeared. I think over some reasonable period of time my left eye will gain clarity which it doesn't completely have today but I have confidence it will

Dr Marc Schmitz-Valckenberg seemed to be in a huge hurry. when I asked him if I could see the pictures of my eyes to compare he said "no" and didn't bother to discuss it any further. while he was examining my eyes with the bright light and magnifying glass I was blinking and he said to stop blinking so much, there was no paparazzi. then he stretched my eye open so wide, it hurt the sides of my eyes. then dr. said "I can't see anything you don't need to ever come back." I will not ever go back to him, but I will follow up with Dr. Shakoor at Moran at UofU and let him decide if he wants to release me from HIS care.

Dr Falkenberg carefully explained the treatment (laser "tacking" down my left retina). A day or two after the treatment, I noticed that my vision was GREATLY improved! The left image is smaller than the normal right, but the color and some degree of sharpness was obtained! In short, my left eye is now contributing to my vision in that left peripheral vision was essentially zero, it now contributes to my vision. Dr Falkenberg is AMAZING! And the Moran Eye Center is obviously a world-class institution.
