  • J. Fredrik Grimmer, MD is a Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Hospital. He is double board-certified in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Pediatric Otolaryngology. He is an expert in pediatric thyroid surgery, vascular anomalies, and otology (ear surgery). Dr. Grimmer provides expert treatment of thyroid nodules and cancer, hemangiomas, lymphatic malformations, AVMs, venous malformations, salivary gland masses, jaw or sinus masses, fetal surgery, and ear disease. Dr. Grimmer also performs routine procedures in children such as ear tubes, removal of tonsils and adenoid, removal of benign neck masses, sinus and nasal surgery and repair of ear drums.

    Dr. Grimmer has distinguished himself as a dedicated clinician and highly competent surgeon tackling some of the most complex surgical cases at Primary Children’s Hospital. He performs complex head and neck surgery, particularly thyroid surgery, at a high volume in children which has been shown to improve outcomes. At Primary Children’s Hospital, he founded the Vascular Anomalies Center, founded and is the Co-Director of the Pediatric Thyroid Center, and co-founded and is the leading fetal ENT surgeon at the Fetal Center.Additionally, he frequently assists neurosurgeons in surgical approaches to the skull base and cervical spine.

    Dr. Grimmer's research interest include the genetic etiology of pediatric thyroid cancer and vascular anomalies, as well as minimally invasive surgery. With over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, he frequently presents research at national meetings and lectures locally, nationally, and internationally. Recently he published on a minimally invasive surgical approach to the skull base, imaging characteristics of pediatric thyroid cancer, and the genetic etiology of Parkes Weber syndrome.

    Dr. Grimmer provides direction and leadership to the nation’s experts in thyroid cancer and vascular anomalies. In the past, he served as the Residency Program Director at the University of Utah and continues to enjoy teaching medical students, residents, and fellows. Originally Dr. Grimmer received a BA at Brigham Young University, an MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completed residency training at the University of Michigan and fellowship training at Children’s Hospital Boston with Harvard Medical School.
