Dr. Maija Holsti, MD, MPH completed her medical degree and a Master’s of Public Health in 1999 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She stayed at University of North Carolina to complete her Pediatric Residency in 2002 and moved to Utah to complete a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at University of Utah in 2005. She is currently a Professor in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Department of Pediatrics at Primary Children’s Hospital and holds the Howard Corneli, M.D. Endowed Chair in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
Dr. Holsti’s clinical and research interests include how to best identify and treat patients with status epilepticus in prehospital settings, emergency departments, and resource-limited clinical environments. She has published on the treatment of status epilepticus and has been the site Principal Investigator for several studies on pediatric treatment of status epilepticus through the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).
Dr. Holsti serves as the Director of Research Education for the Department of Pediatrics which supports several student research education programs. Dr. Holsti is the principal investigator of three NIH grants that support the Native American Summer Research Internship (NARI) and co-investigator of another NIH grant that supports the Genomics Summer Research Internship for Minorities (GSRM). She also directs the Academic Associate Program which supports students interested in a minor degree in Pediatric Research at the University of Utah. She is committed to research education and mentorship for undergraduate, graduate, and physicians in training.
