Blood Sample Guidelines
For pediatric patients, draw requirements are as follows. They are the minimum sample volumes required. These are guidelines for patients who are leukopenic, and most likely will need an increase in total volume.
If you have questions regarding a particular patient please call for clarification at 801-581-3116. If you need to compromise on the blood drawn, please leave off the purple top tubes. If you have any questions, please call before drawing so as not to compromise the patient's hematocrit:
For patients 0–4 years of age:
- HLA-ABC: 7cc blood in one yellow top tube
- (ACD) Antibody Screen: 2cc blood in pedi red top tube (clot)
- DNA typing:3cc blood in pedi purple top tube (EDTA)
For patients over four years of age:
- HLA-ABC: 10cc blood in yellow top tubes
- (ACD) Antibody Screen: 7cc blood in one red top tube (clot)
- DNA typing: 5cc blood in purple top tube(s) (EDTA)
Federal regulations require all clinical blood specimens (tubes, containers) be labeled with the patient's full name (spelled correctly), sample date, and phlebotomist's initials. If these requirements are not met, the lab must delay or refuse testing until compliance is met.
A specimen may be rejected for any of the following reasons:
- Incorrect or compromised specimen (hemolysis, clotted specimens)
- Insufficient volume for analysis
- Unlabeled or improperly labeled specimen
- Leaking specimen
- Specimen that has been sent in incorrect collection tube(s)
- Incomplete or incorrect testing requisition
- Specimen missing sample/draw date
