The 2017 Cancer Conference for the Hispanic/Latino Community of Utah, Salud Para Mi, Es Salud Para Mi Familia, took place Saturday, October 28, at Salt Lake Community College. Huntsman Cancer Institute and Alliance Community Services partnered to organize this event, which more than 200 community members attended.

This year’s conference provided a unique opportunity for the Spanish-speaking community of Utah to learn about cancer and interact with local health care providers. Workshops and presenters included the following:

  • Cancer in Men
  • Cancers of the Digestive System by Cuper Martinez, MD
  • Breast and Cervical Cancer by Dr. Ana Sanchez-Birkhead, PhD, WHNP-BC, APRN
  • Liver Cancer by Ivan R. Zendejas, MD
  • Sexuality in Cancer Survivors by April Carlson, LCSW
  • Colon Cancer by Guadalupe Tovar
  • Nutrition and Physical Activity by Comunidades Unidas
  • Cancer and Genetics by Whitney Espinel, MMsc
Community health workers who attended the event had the opportunity to partake in a workshop about clinical trials and receive a certificate of completion from the University of Utah and Huntsman Cancer Institute. During the closing remarks, keynote speaker and one of the event’s key organizers, Ana Maria Lopez, MD, talked about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

Information booths from local community partners and complimentary health screenings, including blood pressure and glucose readings, were available throughout the day. Healthy meals, fun raffles, and entertainment performances by Real Academia de Baile and Grupo Folklorico Nonatzin made this event a success.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible, including students from the University of Utah School of Medicine and College of Pharmacy and the Triunfadoras Cancer Support Group.
