In 1999, the first research building at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) opened, with a vision that HCI could make a difference in the lives of people with cancer.
Two decades later, we have more than one million supporters, 200 research teams, two research buildings with more than one linear mile of bench space, a 100-bed cancer specialty hospital. In addition, this past September we broke ground on a new clinical expansion, the Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers. This expansion will include 48 new inpatient rooms, a floor dedicated to women’s cancers, increased services for blood and marrow transplant patients, and nearly twice the survivorship and wellness services.
Since Huntsman Cancer Foundation was established in 1995, we have seen unprecedented growth in support. Our founding members stepped up right from the beginning, even when we didn’t know what the next 25 years would bring. Each time we have reached out to our community of donors and asked for your support, you have come through in unprecedented ways. Thank you!
This year, due in no small part to our committed philanthropic partners, we extended our reach and provided new care options for hard-to treat cancers. These are some notable examples:
- For qualified patients, the Huntsman at Home™ service brings the high standard and excellence of care you get at HCI to you in your home.
- Our new cancer screening and education bus, a mobile screening service for breast and skin cancer, extends our care further into the community.
- A two-drug combination therapy shows great promise in the treatment of pancreas cancer.
- Researchers have found a potential new way to treat small cell lung cancer.
Discoveries have been made and lives have been saved because of committed, tenacious, hardworking doctors, researchers, and nurses. And standing beside them along this path are our steadfast and generous donors. With each new phase and each new discovery, we have built a cancer institute that is the world leader in cancer genetics, a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a place of healing and hope.
