About the Pre-Operation Clinic

The Pre-Operation (Pre-Op) Clinic at Huntsman Cancer Institute provides patients who are planning to have surgery access to services that help with physical, emotional, and financial issues. The goal is to improve overall health and well-being before surgery so the patient can recover easier and quicker.

A surgeon must refer you to the Pre-Op Clinic.

Who is eligible for the Pre-Op Clinic?

  • Patients scheduled for surgery 2 weeks or more from the time of referral
  • Patients taking multiple prescribed medications
  • Patients with one or more health conditions in addition to cancer
  • Patients undergoing surgeries expected to last 3 hours or more

What services do patients receive at the Pre-Op Clinic?

Pre-Op Clinic staff arrange for and schedule these services, based on what the patient needs:

  • Evaluation by an anesthesiologist and advanced practice clinician
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Exercise, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or occupational therapy
  • Resources to help stop or cut back on tobacco use
  • Blood sugar management
  • Pain management
  • Anemia screening and treatment
  • Financial counseling
  • Social and emotional support
