The Ophthalmologist has named John A. Moran Eye Center professor and Alan S. Crandall Center for Glaucoma Innovation Director Iqbal "Ike" K. Ahmed, MD, FRCSC, the second most influential person in ophthalmology worldwide.

The magazine’s annual Power List features the Top 100 most influential people, and Ahmed has been repeatedly named among them. Widely recognized as one of the world’s top surgeons for complex eye conditions, Ahmed is also a renowned innovator of surgical devices for the treatment of diseases including glaucoma and surgical complications.

Ahmed’s groundbreaking research has advanced glaucoma care and pioneered a new generation of micro-invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) devices. Implanted into the eye, MIGS devices reduce the high intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma. They are used as part of a modern interventional approach for glaucoma treatment that uses surgical intervention earlier in the course of the disease to preserve vision.

Ahmed directs the Moran Eye Center’s new Alan S. Crandall Center for Glaucoma Innovation, leading to better diagnostics, safer and more effective therapies and surgical devices, a deeper understanding of glaucoma and its genetics, and expanded access to care.

Editors of The Ophthalmologist launched The Power List in 2014 to acknowledge and recognize those making waves in the field of ophthalmology and beyond. Publication readers submitted thousands of nominations, with the finalists chosen from a list of more than 450 names by an international panel of 20 judges.

Aleksandra Jones, editor of The Ophthalmologist, says, "Putting the annual Power List together is the highlight of my year! It is wonderful to see how much this honor means to the people selected for the list, and it’s a great opportunity to celebrate ophthalmology—one of the most forward-thinking fields of clinical practice and research."
