Treating Eye Injuries & Conditions

At the Moran Eye Center's Triage Eye Care Clinic, we provide immediate and specialized treatment to preserve your eyesight. We see patients with chemical injuries, foreign objects in the eye, ruptured globe, retinal detachment, infections, or eye traumas. For most any condition we treat, there is a world-renowned specialist at the Moran Eye Center.

Hours

Mornings:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday mornings: 8 am—11 am
Wednesday: 9 am–11 am

Evenings:
Monday–Friday afternoons, 1 pm—3:30 pm

During non-business hours or evenings, weekends, and holidays, patients with immediate eye issues should proceed to the emergency room at the University of Utah Hospital or the nearest emergency room.

Services

  • Chemical injuries
  • Foreign objects in eye
  • Ruptured globe
  • Retinal detachment
  • Eye infections
  • Eye traumas

Many conditions that we see in our triage service can be treated during the initial visit. In addition, if needed, we will refer patients to our full range of subspecialty services, including retina, cornea, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, and more. The operating rooms at the Moran Eye Center are available for surgical repairs, and our physicians always provide follow-up evaluation and care for patients with eye trauma.

In Case of Eye Trauma

As a general rule, if eye symptoms come quickly, are severe in nature or persistent, or if you just feel that you need to be seen by an ophthalmologist, it might be a good idea to seek care.

Symptoms

Symptoms of eye trauma can include these things:

  • Severe eyelid swelling or inability to open the eye
  • Persistent pain
  • Sudden sensitivity to light
  • New-onset flashing lights
  • Any sudden change or loss of vision

Emergency Steps

If you experience a trauma or eye injury, you should follow these steps:

  • Don’t try and remove the object
  • Loosely cover the eye
  • Seek emergency care immediately

Chemical Burn

In the case of a chemical burn, flush the eye with water before getting urgent care.
