What is Virtual Primary Care?
A virtual primary care appointment is just like a regular primary care appointment, but from the comfort of your home. Virtual visits are just as thorough and personalized as in-person appointments. Our board-certified providers are part of one of the nation's top academic medical centers. As an academic medical institution, U of U Health has an unwavering commitment to innovative, patient-centered care. Whether you visit with us in person or virtually, we promise to deliver exceptional personal, compassionate care.

When to Schedule an In-Person Visit
Some health concerns need an in-person visit:
- Initial visits to begin a controlled substance must be in person.
- Annual physical exams cannot be done virtually.
- All diagnostic work such as labs or imaging must be in person.
A variety of health visits can be done virtually:
- Acute care
- Chronic disease management
- Evaluations
- Medication refills
- Mental health evaluations
- Pediatric appointments
- Routine checkups
For urgent needs like cold and flu symptoms, schedule a virtual urgent care visit.

How Does Virtual Primary Care Work?
All you need to attend your virtual appointment is your phone, tablet, or computer. You'll also need a reliable internet connection. Your privacy is protected. We use secure, HIPAA-compliant technology to keep your information safe.
Before Your Visit
- Technology check—You will receive instructions on how to join via a secure platform. We usually send instructions through MyChart, but you may also receive a video link. Download the MyChart app for iPhone/iPad or Android.
- Update paperwork—You may need to update paperwork or sign a consent to treat before your appointment. You can complete this step in MyChart.
During Your Appointment
Virtual visits are just like in-person appointments, but from the comfort of your home. You'll experience all the normal parts of a primary care visit:
- Identity Verification—Your provider will confirm your identity and location. Please note: you must be in Utah at the time of your virtual visit. Your provider will also review your consent for telehealth.
- Discussion of Concerns— Talk to your provider about the reason behind your visit. Discuss your symptoms, questions, concerns, and other related topics.
- Visual Assessment—Your provider may ask you to adjust your camera so they can examine you. For example, they may ask to see your throat, skin, or range of motion.
- Medication Review—Your provider can discuss your medications and order refills of your current prescriptions.
- Care Plan—At the end of your visit, your provider explains next steps. They may suggest further tests, prescriptions, or follow-up visits. You will need to schedule an in person appointment for lab work or imaging.
