Top in Quality for 15 Years Running

For the 15th consecutive year, University of Utah Health has been recognized as a top performer in the 2024 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Study by Vizient, Inc.

The Quality Leadership Award recognizes academic medical centers for demonstrating superior quality and safety performance as measured by the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study. The study measures superior performance based on the Institute of Medicine’s six domains of care: safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity and patient centeredness.

Top 10 in Ambulatory Care for 9 Years Running

U of U Health has also ranked in the top 10 in the nation for ambulatory care for ten consecutive years, ranking #3 in 2024. The Vizient Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award measures the quality of outpatient care in five domains: access to care, capacity and throughput, quality and efficiency, continuum of care, and equity.

2024-25 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital Rankings

For the eleventh consecutive year, the University of Utah Hospital was ranked No. 1 in Utah and in the Salt Lake City metro area. The John A. Moran Eye Center is ranked #10 in the country for ophthalmology care and Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital is ranked #27 for rehabilitation care. 

In 2024-2025, U.S. News Best Hospitals ranked hospitals in the U.S. across 15 specialties, procedures, and conditions. Of the nearly 4,500 hospitals analyzed and 25,000 physicians surveyed, only 160 hospitals ranked in at least one of the specialties.

2024 LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer Designation

University of Utah Hospital, Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital, University Orthopaedic Center, Huntsman Cancer Institute, and Huntsman Mental Health Institute are among the 462 healthcare facilities nationwide earning the “high performer” designation in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 16th edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The HEI is the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey of health care facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees. A record 1,065 healthcare facilities actively participated in the HEI 2024 survey and 462 of those earned an "LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer" designation.

2024 American Medical Association (AMA) Joy in Medicine

In 2024, University of Utah Health earned recognition from the American Medical Association (AMA) as a Joy in Medicine (JIM)™ recognized organization. CMS’s Hospital Compare ranking shows University of Utah Hospital performing above the national average in safety of care and readmission rates. The prestigious AMA distinction is granted only to organizations that attest to the rigorous criteria of the Joy in Medicine™ Health System Recognition Program and demonstrate a commitment to preserving the well-being of clinical care team members through proven efforts to combat work-related stress and burnout.

2024 Newsweek World's Best Smart Hospitals

University of Utah Health has been awarded on Newsweek's list of World's Best Smart Hospitals 2024. The World's Best Smart Hospitals 2024 lists the 300 best medical institutions worldwide that are leading the field in smart technologies. The survey included recommendations for five sub-categories: AI, digital imaging, telemedicine, robotics and electronic functionalities.

2024 NRC Health Consumer Loyalty Award

U of U Health is one of 100 hospitals nationwide to receive a 2024 Loyalty Consumer Award. Recipients were selected from NRC Health’s national market insights study, which polled more than 300,000 consumers across the U.S. from April 2023 to March 2024. To qualify for the list, an organization had to secure at least 150 top-of-mind mentions from customers in the survey.

2023 Forbes Best Employers for Women

Forbes ranked U of U Health No. 102 out of the top 400 best employers for women. The list is largely derived from surveys administered to 60,000 workers — two-thirds of whom were women. Workers rated their employers in areas like work environment, salary and employee diversity. Women were asked to rate pay equity, parental leave policies, gender diversity, flexibility, the availability of leadership and advancement opportunities for women, representation of women in upper management, and employer response to discriminatory incidents. Finally, researchers identified the percentage of women in each company's executive management or board and used the collective information to generate a score. 

2024 Fortune Top 100 Hospitals in US and No. 8 Major Teaching Hospital

Fortune/PINC AI recognized University of Utah Hospital on its list of 100 Top Hospitals in the U.S., with a No. 8 ranking among the 15 Top Major Teaching Hospitals.  2,601 hospitals were evaluated. Research was based on the following: Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.
