  • Benjamin Maughan MD, PharmD is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Medical Oncology at Huntsman Cancer Institute specializing in genitourinary malignancies. Dr. Maughan completed his PharmD, cum laude, from Idaho State University in 2004, then completed an oncology pharmacy residency at Mountain States Tumor Institute in 2005. Dr. Maughan earned his MD, cum laude, from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine in 2010. He finished his Internal Medicine residency training with the University of Utah in 2013 and subsequently completed his medical oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins in 2016. He has been awarded the Huntsman Cancer Institute Translational Scholar Award in 2019, and was selected for the 2019 SWOG Young Investigator Training Course.

Dr. Maughan has clinical and research interests in all genitourinary oncology, with a particular focus on the development of novel therapeutics and in identification of predictive biomarkers. During fellowship he studied predictive biomarkers in metastatic prostate cancer, specifically the role of truncated androgen receptors (AR-V7 expression) and loss of tumor suppressors (PTEN and Rb). More recently he is studying predictive biomarkers to immune therapy combinations in kidney, bladder and prostate cancers. He is exploring novel immune therapy combinations including checkpoint inhibitors combined with radiation therapy (radium-223), oncolytic viruses (MVA-brachyury) and targeted therapies (such as cabozantinib).

He is the lead physician in a SWOG clinical trial exploring a novel treatment for patients with metastatic papillary kidney cancer.

Dr. Maughan has effectively responded to some of my queries, which I've read from on-line journals & reports and conference proceedings. His insights and recommendations have guided me towards information helpful to my understanding about my medical health issues and away from that which would not apply to my situations. For me, he is an effective communicator providing me protocol options from which to chose to "improve the quality of life" remaining for me . . . . . as well as medications which might have personally undesired ... "side effects."

I¿ve seen a lot of doctors in my day. It seems that sometimes the better they are at medicine the worse they are with patients. Dr Maughan is different though. He¿s patient and takes the time to explain what I may not understand. His teams always have good things to say about him, too, which says a lot

Dr. Maughan was factual, caring, listening, and asked what I wanted to know. I like that he did not hedge on the seriousness of my condition, but was also compassionate. He explained things clearly and responded to my questions. He instilled confidence in himself and services offered at Huntsman Cancer Institute. Dr. Maughan was highly recommended and did not disappoint.

We just can't say enough about how comforting it is to be cared for by Dr. Maughan and his team. He is caring, thoughtful, listens well and explains everything with kindness and compassion. He speaks directly to you as the patient yet takes in all the available information from the family. Everyone is so kind and caring and this is always so important but especially in caring for my elderly mother. She adores Dr. Maughan and has great faith in his excellent care. I appreciate how he uses the most recent evidence based practice in a sensible and practical way....with almost the patients utmost care in mind.
