  • Hilary McCrary, MD, MPH is a surgeon at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Utah. She is board-certified in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and fellowship trained in head and neck surgical oncology, microvascular reconstruction, and advanced robotic surgery by the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS).

    Originally from rural Castle Valley, Utah (near Moab, Utah), Dr. McCrary graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona. After her undergraduate degree, she worked abroad in Tanzania for a non-profit organization focused on increasing access to HIV testing and education in rural villages. This is where her love for public health was sparked, and she subsequently pursued a Master of Public Health, followed by a Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Arizona. During medical school she was inducted into both the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha national medical honor society.

    Following medical school, she opted to return home to Utah, where she completed her residency training in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. It was here where she gained a passion for caring for head and neck cancer patients under the guidance of her head and neck surgical mentors. She also saw first-hand the direct impact that the Huntsman Cancer Institute had on the mountain west states. Her interest in head and neck cancer care drove her to pursue a head and neck fellowship at one of the busiest clinical fellowships in the country at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. During fellowship, she was trained in the full gamut head and neck cancer care, including complex ablation, head and neck microvascular reconstruction, and robotic surgery with 10 influential leaders within the field of head and neck surgical oncology.

    Dr. McCrary’s clinical interests within head and neck cancer span the full breadth of the field, but has a special interest in oropharyngeal carcinoma, paragangliomas, and complex microvascular reconstruction. Given her background in public health and biostatistical analysis, her research interests are primarily focused on the utilization of large state-wide (Utah Populations Database) and national datasets to help further elucidate trends in head and neck cancer. Dr. McCrary also has a special interest in surgical education, and completed a Surgical Education Research Fellowship during residency. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and numerous book chapters. She currently holds positions on national committees focus on improving head and neck cancer care and education through the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. She looks forward to giving back to the state she was raised in as a head and neck surgeon.
