Benjamin R. Chan, MD, MBA, MEd

Benjamin R. Chan, MD, MBA, MEd is an Adjunct Professor (Clinical Attending) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, where he has served as an inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, educator, and academic leader for more than 14 years.

Dr. Chan received his BA in Psychology with a minor in Human Biology from Stanford University (2000) and his MD from the University of Utah School of Medicine (2004). He completed residency training in General Psychiatry at George Washington University, including a Residency Fellowship in Health Policy, and holds fellowships in both Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (University of Maryland, where he also served as Chief Resident) and Integrative Medicine (University of Arizona). He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology in both General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He subsequently earned an MBA from the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business, a Master of Education from the University of Cincinnati, and completed the University of Utah School of Medicine's Medical Scholars Program.

During his tenure at the School of Medicine, Dr. Chan served as Associate Dean of Admissions and Associate Dean of Idaho and Regional Affairs, overseeing a mission-driven admissions process and helping shape the careers of more than 1,800 physicians who received their acceptance letters under his leadership. He co-created and directed the Rural & Underserved Utah Training Experience (RUUTE), an initiative that reached over 12,000 K–12 students, supported 71 undergraduate rural research projects, sent 555 medical students on rural clinical rotations, and helped establish the groundwork for the Southern Utah Regional Medical Campus launching in Fall 2026.

Dr. Chan also contributed to expanding medical education access across Idaho, including advocacy that supported growth in Idaho's medical student positions and the establishment of a rural psychiatry residency program in partnership with Idaho State University. His regional work further advanced the possibility of a Boise regional medical campus, which would significantly expand medical education access across the Intermountain West.

Since 2014, Dr. Chan has served as an instructor in the Clinical Methods Curriculum (CMC), a longitudinal small-group learning community in which medical students develop foundational clinical skills, from writing progress notes and conducting cardiac and musculoskeletal exams to building the habits of mind that define excellent physicians. Over more than a decade, he has directly mentored more than 50 medical students across six graduating classes. He has also contributed to national medical education through the AAMC, including the Competency-Based Medical Education Language Project and the Situational Judgment Test Advisory Committee, and served as an associate editor for MedEdPORTAL from 2016 to 2026. He continues to see patients as a hospitalist and mentor and teach the next generation of physicians at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute.
