Dr. Mark Deneau is the medical director of the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic at Primary Children’s Hospital / Intermountain Healthcare. He leads a multidisciplinary team caring for children and young adults with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, combining clinical expertise with a deeply personal understanding—Dr. Deneau has lived with IBD himself since his teenage years. That experience shapes his approach to care, allowing him to connect with patients and families on a meaningful level and help them live their best possible lives. When it’s helpful, he’s open about sharing his own journey through medications and surgery.

In addition to his work with IBD, Dr. Deneau treats a wide range of general pediatric gastroenterology conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic abdominal pain, and constipation. He takes a thoughtful, conservative approach—avoiding unnecessary procedures or excessive testing whenever possible. He is also part of the liver diseases program and sees patients admitted to the hospital with biliary atresia and liver transplantation.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Deneau teaches and mentors medical students, pediatric residents, and fellows, and has received multiple teaching awards for his excellence in communication. He brings this same clarity and compassion to his clinical work, ensuring patients and families understand their diagnoses, treatments, and medications. He draws on humor to connect with families and ease difficult conversations

His research focuses on liver disease in children with IBD, particularly primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). He also leads and participates in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety and reducing the cost of care for gastrointestinal conditions.

Outside of the hospital, you can find him mountain biking or working on a massive Lego project with his boys.
