  • Matthew Moench, MD, completed medical school at the University of Virginia and residency at Stanford University, where he served as Chief Resident and received extensive training in mood disoders, psychopharmacology and women's health. During his time at Stanford, he was named Resident of the Year. Dr. Moench now sees patients in the University of Utah Huntsman Mental Health Institute's Downtown Behavioral Health Clinic, which he helped found in 2006. Dr. Moench was the recipient of the department's 2012 Clinical Award, the 2013 Supervision Award, the 2015 Teaching Award, the 2021 Excellence in Teaching Award, the 2021 Outstanding Clinical Supervision Award and is board certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

    Growing up in Salt Lake City, Dr. Moench was introduced to psychiatry at the breakfast table by two other Dr. Moenches -- his father and grandfather, both of whom were psychiatrists. As Assistant Professor (Clinical), Dr. Moench serves as a supervising physician for medical students and resident psychiatrists. He is the medical director of the Resident Continuity clinic and the medical director for the HMHI Behavioral Health Network. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Moench teaches psychopharmacology to training psychiatrists and medical students. He has lectured on mental illness to numerous Utah groups including at the annual Generations conference. Dr. Moench is also active in the Utah Psychiatric Association, where he has served as the president.
