SALT LAKE CITY—U.S. News & World Report has released its 2017-2018 Best Hospital Rankings. For the fourth consecutive year, University of Utah Hospital was ranked No. 1 in Utah and in the Salt Lake City metro area. University of Utah's Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) was also ranked number 38 in the country for cancer care, while the university's Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialty was ranked 18th nationwide.
Additionally, University of Utah Health was recognized as "high-performing" in the following specialties: nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
"These latest results confirm the years of top rankings University of Utah Health has received in quality and patient satisfaction in the nation, including our recent #1 in Quality designation," said Gordon Crabtree, Interim CEO of University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. The top 20 ranking in the Ear, Nose, and Throat category recognizes care provided for a range of common health issues to complex, chronic health challenges, including cold, allergies, and swallowing therapy. "Our recognition in the ENT specialty is particularly well-deserved, and we are extremely proud to be so highly lauded by U.S. News in this category," said Clough Shelton, MD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Otolaryngology at University of Utah Health.
HCI climbed nine positions over its 2016-2017 rank in the cancer specialty. "It is a great honor to see HCI again acknowledged as one of the top cancer hospitals in the U.S.," said Mary Beckerle, PhD, CEO and Director of HCI. "Our patient satisfaction surveys have frequently placed the cancer center in the top percentile nationally. It is gratifying to see HCI included in such a distinguished peer group of hospitals through this rigorous assessment of our cancer care programs."
For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.
