Introducing: 7 Domains of Women's Health — the show

Nov 05, 2020

Together with The Scope Presents, women's health expert Kirtly Jones, MD, introduces 7 Domains of Women's Health—the show.

Women's health is so much more than the problems brought to the doctor's office. In this show, an extension of the 7 Domains of Women's Health segments, Dr. Jones looks at women's health through the lens of physical, emotional, social, intellectual, financial, environmental, and spiritual health—the seven domains of women's health. These are conversations for all the women in your life, and we are going to have these conversations together.

    Introducing Dr. Kirtly Jones

Welcome. I'm Dr. Kirtly Jones from University of Utah Health, and this is the "7 Domains of Women's Health" podcast on The Scope.

I'm retired from my practice of reproductive medicine and the honor of listening for 40 years to women tell their stories about their lives. Over the years, it's clear that women are so much more than the problems that they brought to our office, and their problems at home and in their neighborhood affect their health and you know that. Every medical problem is molded by the complexities of women's lives for better and for worse.

Introducing 7 Domains of Women's Health — The Show

So we're here at the studios of The Scope at University of Utah Health to talk about women's health through the lenses, through the spectacles, of the seven domains of women's health:

    • Physical
    • Emotional
    • Social
    • Intellectual
    • Financial
    • Environmental
    • Spiritual

We'll have interviews, quizzes, fast facts, and conversation. Our upcoming episodes will look at love and whether it's a secondhand emotion. That's me and Tina Turner are going to talk about that, but it's mostly just going to be me.

But we have some wonderful interviews, topics like menopause and what's it like to make this transition in your life.

Dr. Jones: So what happens to the brain when it doesn't get estrogens anymore?

Guest #1: Yeah, we've been studying that for quite a while and one of the things is the neurons start to pull apart and start to shrivel.

    Dr. Jones: Oh, no.

    Guest #1: Yeah.

And nutrition—what you should and shouldn't eat.

Guest #2: So instead of saying a food is good or bad and moralizing it, it's not that the apple is morally good and the chocolate cake is morally bad. The chocolate cake can be just as good for us sometimes as the apple is.

And domestic violence—which is part of so many people's lives and what we can do about it.

Guest #3: Our clients can define what is happening to them however they want. So if folks come in and they say this is happening and this, this and this, what is going on with me, how do you define this? We try to explore how they conceptualize what, for example, domestic violence is to them, what that means to them.

And other big health issues in the lives of women and their families.

Guest #4: When I start talking to them about puberty changes, I always start saying: So are you checking down there? Do you know how to check down there? Has anyone ever talked to you about checking down there? Does everything feel okay? If anything doesn't feel okay, would you tell somebody?

So here's what we're doing here. We're going to be talking a little bit more in-depth on various topics and how each of the 7 domains of health affects that particular medical issue so that we can put these really important critical issues in a framework that really mirrors the lives that we lead.

This is a conversation for all the women in your life, and we're going to have this conversation together. They'll be about 30 minutes, so tune in with your coffee or your water. Get on your exercise bike or go for a walk. We're about just the right length to get in your daily motion. Put on your virtual stethoscope and listen to your own heartbeat. And join us for the "7 Domains of Women's Health" wherever you get your podcasts.
